Title:   Special Education Teacher, Moderate/Severe Extensive Support Needs


Salary Schedule Range:   Depends on Experience (Highest placement would be at Class III, Step 13 of the Teacher Salary Schedule.  Annual stipends for a Master’s and Doctorate degrees.

Purpose of Position: Teach students with extensive support needs.


Essential Functions:

  • Strong background in implementing behavior management skills
  • Ability to modify or adapt materials to meet each individual’s needs
  • Highly qualified and competent teacher with the ability to teach at all levels of extensive support needs 
  • Committed to the welfare and education of all students 
  • Develop a balanced program with appropriate activities designed to encourage pupils to develop good skills and attitudes.


Abilities and Knowledge

  • Plan, design and implement, in collaboration with both special education and general education teachers, curricular programs and instructional strategies that facilitate the successful transition/integration of students with moderate and severe disabilities/behaviors in the least restrictive environment
  • Work with each student to attain his/her learning potential
  • Able to teach using Common Core State Standards
  • Establish and maintain standard of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s development in the course(s) being taught and prepare necessary reports.
  • Will maintain professional competence through participation in Professional Learning, PLCs and in self-selected professional growth activities.


Working Conditions & Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
  • Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies, and other printed matter and observing students.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal speech levels.
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Moderate to high stress levels.
  • Work is predominantly in a school environment. 
  • Climate is normal; occasional adverse weather conditions.
  • Regular Contact with students, teachers, school staff, district staff, parents and community members.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.



Required Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid California Special Education Credential with moderate/severe or severely handicapped authorization 
  • Bilingual Cross Cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD or BCLAD) credential, or equivalent.
  • If not fully credentialed, candidate must be willing to enroll in credential program and have at least 18 semester units in the subject area to qualify for a short term staff permit; or must be enrolled in a credential program and be eligible for an internship credential.
