Position Description 

North Haven High School is seeking a passionate and dedicated Special Education 

Teacher to provide high-quality, specially designed instruction to students with 

disabilities in both resource and co-taught classroom settings. The ideal candidate will play a key role in preparing students for life after high school by delivering individualized instruction focused on transition skills, independent living, employability, and academic success within the general education curriculum. 

 

Education, Qualifications and Expectations 

  • Degree in Special Education and State of Connecticut Special Education certification (165); 
  • Working knowledge of the co-teaching and consultative models; 
  • Collaboration with classroom teachers in a co-teaching and/or consultative role 
    • including lesson development, delivery of differentiated instruction, and analysis of student performance data;
  • Deliver specially designed instruction aligned to each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), incorporating goals focused on academics, transition, and life skills; 
  • Implement transition assessments and activities to support students in developing skills for postsecondary education, employment, and independent living;
  • Ability to initiate productive communication to address student concerns with administration, team members, and parents; 
  • Develop a daily/weekly schedule of instructional and non-instructional activities for each paraeducator that supports students on your caseload always with the intent to build students’ independence; 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Planning and Placement Team process and legal and related compliance; 
  • Conduct appropriate evaluations and assist other teams in understanding the special education eligibility process for students with or suspected of having a disability, including the use of state guidelines; 
  • Demonstrate teacher-leadership qualities to bring initiative and innovation to the special education department in the above areas; 
  • Engage students through positive behavior strategies, differentiated instruction, and inclusive practices to promote their success and independence.

vision and distance vision.
