POSITION SUMMARY: This position is primarily responsible for creating and delivering academic instruction to students at Behavioral Health Allies (BHA) Academy in their respective hall or classroom under the direction of a Licensed Special Education Teacher. 


In addition to demonstrating the company’s Core Competencies applicable to all positions, the Certified Special Education Substitute Teacher is responsible for the following Professional Skills Competencies:

Requirements

  

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in a related field or related experience and completion of a DESE Approved Training Program.

Missouri Substitute Teacher’s Certificate required.

1 year experience working as a substitute teacher is preferred.

2 years’ experience working with children with autism, developmental delays, and maladaptive behaviors preferred. 

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (i.e. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).

Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize work. 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Demonstrates taking initiative, anticipating needs, and exercising independent/sound judgment. 

Ability to demonstrate fiscal responsibility. 


INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING AND DELIVERY

  1. Assist with instruction and accommodations as outlined within an existing IEP.
  2. Utilize various instructional strategies and resources to engage students and accommodate different learning styles under the direction of the certified teacher.
  3. Employ special education strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory, perceptual, motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  4. Assist in delivering modified curriculum as directed by the Special Education Teacher.
  5. Implement accommodations and modifications already outlined in a student’s IEP.
  6. Support differentiated instruction under the teacher’s guidance.
  7. Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques.
  8. Implement lesson plans developed by  the Special Education Teacher.
  9. Assist in delivering small-group or one-on-one instruction.
  10. Reinforce skills and concepts  previously taught by the certified teacher.
  11. Utilize instructional materials and resources prepared by the teacher
  12. Provide coaching and modeling on all academic programming to paraeducators.
  13. Assist in the collection of data.
  14. Review the collected data in  cooperation with a licensed special education teacher and implement potential modifications to the goals and educational delivery of the goals.
  15. Assist in the creation of materials  that correlate with the IEP goals and instruction that the licensed teacher has created.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

  1. Support positive behavior strategies outlined in students' Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  2. Implement behavior management strategies in alignment with students’ IEPs to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
  3. Help maintain a structured and supportive learning environment.
  4. Implement classroom routines and procedures.
  5. Maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes learning and respect for all students.
  6. Foster social and emotional development through effective classroom management techniques, utilizing the principles and philosophy of Applied Behavior Analysis and evidence-based practices.
  7. Provide students with direct and indirect instructional support in a positive environment.

COLLABORATION AND TEAMWORK

  1. Work closely with management, therapists, clinical staff, and support staff to meet student needs.
  2. Attend meetings and training sessions related to special education as deemed appropriate by the Director of Vice President.
  3. Work with paraprofessionals and support staff to ensure student needs are met.
  4. Communicate observations about student progress or concerns to the Special Education Teacher.
  5. Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and IEP details

MANAGEMENT/LEADERSHIP

  1. Serve as a      role model to establish and foster a positive culture based on trust, respect, collaboration, and integrity. 

COMPLIANCE AND DOCUMENTATION

  1. Ensure that the IEP is followed and implemented as written by the certified special education teacher.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  1. Engage in reflective practice to continuously improve teaching strategies and student outcomes.
  2. Collaborate with colleagues to share resources, strategies, and ideas for effective special education instruction.

OTHER DUTIES

  1. Perform other duties and special projects to support various organizational initiatives as assigned.
  2. Responsible, either directly or indirectly, for filing all expense reports according to company policy.
  3. Directly or indirectly responsible for completing time reports on or before the defined due date.

Occasionally (6-33%):  Reaching, standing, walking, talking. Sedentary to light work: Exerting 10-20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or consistently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Frequently (34-66%): Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, repetitive motion. Medium to heavy work: Exerting 50-100+ lbs. occasionally and/or in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. 

Continuously (67-100%): Hearing and visual acuity required for the position (including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus). If required by position “driver status”, the employee must maintain visual acuity adequate to operate a motor vehicle.  Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents, including the ability to speak, hear, and observe students to assess their needs and progress.

Frequently (34-66%): Computer, copier, fax, calculator, writing instrument and telephone.

Continuously (67-100%): Frequent use of hands and fingers for handling, reaching, and manipulating objects, tools, or controls. Ability to operate standard classroom equipment such as computers, projectors, and other instructional tools.


WORKING CONDITIONS: This position is performed primarily indoors at the administrative office.

Work is typically performed in a school environment, which may involve exposure to moderate noise levels, potential exposure to bodily fluids, and other conditions associated with working closely with children.
