    Substitute Teachers and Paraprofessionals are needed for Day to Day and Long term positions.


    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    Substitute Teachers: Under direction of the Building Principal, the Substitute provides appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure Success for Every Student.  Supervises students in a variety of school related settings. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

    Substitute
    Paraprofessional position: Under direction of the Building Principal, the Paraprofessional assists teachers by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being. Works individually and in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance, and support learning. This position also performs a variety of instructional and classroom management supports, as well as related clerical tasks to support teachers and other professional staff in all classrooms or learning environments.

    Rate of Pay:

    Substitute Teacher:
    • High School Diploma/GED/Associate Degree – Class C - $15.06 per hour
    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher – Class B - $19.06 per hour
    • A college student with a Major in Education that will qualify for a Teaching License with 60 plus credits- Class B- $16.80 per hour
    • Certified Teacher – Class A - $23.86 per hour
    Substitute Paraprofessional:
    • Specialized paraprofessional (RISE, Foundations, Skillbuilders and Change Makers)- $19.06 per hour
    • Other paraprofessionals- $15.06 per hour
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position:
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

    SUBSTITUTE TEACHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Provides a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
    • Follows instructional plans, lessons, experiments, and other support activities to present approved district curriculum in accordance with district goals and objectives.
    • Maintains accurate records, tests, reports, etc.
    • Establishes and maintains good rapport and communication with students, school personnel and parents.
    • Establishes classroom routines and procedures and implements effective classroom management.
    • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal/Supervisor.
    SUBSTITUTE PARAPROFESSIONAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe following information is intended to describe the overall nature and scope of the work being performed in relation to the position.  This is not a comprehensive listing of all the responsibilities or tasks; other work may be assigned when deemed appropriate:
    • Assists in providing a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the students’ needs, interests, and abilities.
    • Demonstrates professionalism, maintain confidentiality, accept constructive feedback and maintain an atmosphere that promotes student learning.
    • Supports the classroom teacher in instruction by engaging in planning, following plans outlined by the teacher, and working with individual students/small groups.
    • Supports the classroom teacher in assessment by monitoring independent work, collecting academic/behavioral data, and assisting in keeping accurate/current record of student progress.
    • Supports the classroom teacher in organization by performing clerical duties, assisting in gathering/developing instructional materials, and maintaining an organized work environment.
    • Demonstrates characteristics of an effective team member by engaging in problem solving, and exhibiting flexibility, and cooperation
    • Assumes other responsibilities and perform other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Director of Educational Resources/Executive Director of Teaching and Learning
    SUBSTITUTE PARAPROFESSIONAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position: 
    This position may require frequent bending, walking, running, and lifting of objects/equipment up to 50 pounds may be required. Additional demands may require moving wheelchairs, assisting with toileting, feeding and other daily living activities. Assist with self-care plans such as toileting, feeding, personal hygiene, dressing and other daily living activities; physically assist students to engage in activities such as walking or eating, able to kneel and work on the floor with students, able to walk for long periods. Assistance with physically aggressive behaviors required.
     
    PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
    The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment.  Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
    • All persons employed by the Appoquinimink School District are required to submit a criminal background check and a tuberculosis test.
    • Anyone offered employment is required to provide the following:  proper identification (Social Security Card and Driver’s License), documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.A., completion of I-9 form, and completion of paperwork for the Delaware Child Protection Registry.
