Long-Term Paraprofessional Substitute

This is a temporary position that will run from January 5 through April 24, 2026.

Department: Pied Piper School
Reports To: Pied Piper Principal

Summary:

The Long-Term Substitute Paraprofessional provides instructional and personal care support to students and assists classroom teachers in implementing lesson plans and individualized student programs. This position may work in classrooms serving students with moderate to severe cognitive impairments (CI), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), emotional impairments (EI), and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) preschool classrooms. The substitute paraprofessional is directly responsible to the Supervisor of Pied Piper and the classroom teacher. The role includes supporting students in specialized programs or on an individual basis, offering supervision, assistance, explanation, and re-teaching as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Long-Term Substitute Paraprofessional will perform duties including, but not limited to:

  • Assisting students with dressing, toileting, eating, and other self-help skills; including lifting or transferring non-ambulatory students between wheelchairs, commodes, and mats.
  • Supporting the development of pre-academic, academic, prevocational, vocational, social-emotional, behavioral, and psychomotor skills as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Implementing prescriptive programs designed by occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, behavior specialists, and other support staff under teacher direction.
  • Supporting lesson planning activities, performance objective assessments, and general program planning under teacher guidance.
  • Participating in all classroom and school activities across CI, ASD, EI, and ECSE settings, including physical education, vocational tasks, play-based learning, community-based instruction, and leisure activities.
  • Using instructional technology, including computers and communication devices, to support student learning as directed by the teacher.
  • Carrying out daily instructional and support plans in accordance with ISD policies and individualized student plans.
  • Assisting the team in supporting students with behavioral, communication, sensory, and social needs; following individualized behavior support strategies and plans.
  • Maintaining a high level of confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Maintaining regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Remaining free from alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made.

The Long-Term Substitute Paraprofessional must be able to:

  • Transfer or lift children and heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
  • Assist physically limited students on and off buses.
  • Support toileting, feeding, and dressing needs.
  • Provide physical assistance to students as they move throughout the classroom or school environment.
  • Clean up after student accidents (bending, squatting, sitting).
  • Accompany and support students on community-based field trips (walking, climbing steps, sustained sitting).
  • Maintain acute vision (corrected if needed), including close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Perform repetitive wrist/hand/finger movements for computer and office-related tasks.
  • Maintain dependable attendance and remain free from alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances while employed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License required & reliable transportation. 
  • Experience working in CI, ASD, EI, or ECSE classrooms or with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Ability to meet physical job requirements
  • Coursework in child development, early childhood, or special education preferred.
  • Ability to independently complete assigned tasks.
  • Basic computer skills, including Internet use.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to pass a criminal history background check.


Salary Range: The salary will be commensurate with education and demonstrated experience of the successful candidate to fulfill the requirements of the position as determined by administration.
