Diesel Heavy Equipment Program Paraprofessional
Job Summary:
Careerline Tech Center in Holland, MI is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Diesel Heavy Equipment Program Paraprofessional to support the instructional and operational needs of our Diesel and Heavy Equipment program. The ideal candidate will have recent industry experience, strong mechanical knowledge, and a commitment to helping students prepare for careers in the diesel and heavy equipment industry. This position supports the lead instructor in delivering hands-on training, preparing students for industry credentials, and maintaining a safe, engaging, and well-equipped learning environment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist the instructor in delivering diesel and heavy equipment training aligned with industry and state standards.
- Demonstrate and model proper safety protocols, tool usage, and mechanical repair procedures.
- Support student learning during classroom instruction, lab/shop activities, and hands-on training.
- Supervise and guide students during equipment maintenance, diagnostics, and repair projects.
- Ensure tools, machinery, and training equipment are maintained, organized, and ready for instructional use.
- Monitor student behavior, engagement, and participation; provide support and redirection as needed.
- Assist students with modified instruction as needed, including those with documented accommodations (IEPs, 504 Plans).
- Maintain necessary documentation related to student accommodations in collaboration with instructors and support staff.
- Collaborate with the instructor to plan engaging lessons and support student success in achieving industry-recognized credentials.
- Perform other duties as assigned to enhance the effectiveness of the Diesel Heavy Equipment Program.
Education and Experience: - A minimum of 60 college credit hours from an accredited institution
- OR
- 4,000 hours of recent and relevant diesel/heavy equipment industry experience within the past 6 years, which can be documented and verified.
- Prior diesel or heavy equipment industry experience required.
- Prior experience working with high school-aged students is a plus.
- Relevant ASE or diesel/heavy equipment certifications preferred.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities: - Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, heavy equipment systems, and industry-standard repair techniques.
- Ability to model and enforce safety procedures in a high-risk training environment.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work with students of varying abilities and backgrounds in a hands-on, practical setting.
- Familiarity with shop tools, diagnostic technology, and heavy equipment commonly used in the trade.
- Commitment to supporting student achievement and professional growth in skilled trades.
- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, and safely handling tools, equipment, and machinery in a diesel/heavy equipment shop environment.
Physical Requirements: - Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, and reach for extended periods while performing job duties.
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally heavier with assistance or mechanical aids.
- Must have the physical strength and stamina to handle tools, equipment, and heavy vehicle components.
- Ability to safely operate hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and heavy machinery as required.
- Requires adequate vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception) and hearing to diagnose mechanical issues and operate safely in a shop environment.
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills necessary for precise repair and maintenance tasks.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to loud noises, vibration, exhaust fumes, oils, solvents, and other shop-related conditions.
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including indoors, outdoors, hot, cold, and confined spaces.
Compensation and Details: - Pay: Starting at $24.52/Hour
- Schedule: Full-time, School Year, 189 days per year (183 working days 6 paid holidays)
- Employee Group: Non-union hourly
- Benefits: Full benefits package, including health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance. MPSERS provided retirement plan.
- FLSA: Non-exempt
