    Paraprofessionals must meet one of the following qualifications:
          1. Have 2 years of college credits or
          2. Have a college degree or
          3. Pass the ParaPro Praxis Assessment with a score of 457 or higher or the Idaho       Paraprofessional Testing Alternative with a score of 75% or higher.
     
    Idaho Paraprofessional Testing Alternative testing dates are offered at the school district throughout the year to West Ada Paraprofessional applicants.  The test should be passed within 90 days of hire.

    Purpose
    Supports K–5 general education students and staff by responding to classroom behaviors that
    disrupt instruction, implementing Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS), assisting with
    de-escalation, supervising and supporting students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS).
    Performs related classroom, office and supervisory duties as required in an elementary school
    setting.
     
    Performance Responsibilities
    The primary function of an employee in this class is to provide behavioral and instructional
    support in elementary classrooms, offices, and student supervision areas. Supervised by the
    Building Principal and Dean of Student Achievement.
     
    Essential Duties
    • Respond calmly and promptly to disruptive behavior in K–5 classrooms; use child-appropriate de-escalation and behavior management strategies to restore safety and learning.
    • Provide in-class support to general education teachers: assist with transitions, small-group instruction, classroom management, and reinforcement of routines.
    • Supervise students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS) at the elementary level; ensure age-appropriate work is completed and expectations are followed.
    • Implement PBS strategies, reinforcement systems (e.g., token economies, behavior charts), and individualized behavior plans as directed.
    • Deliver tutoring and small-group academic support aligned to K–5 curriculum under teacher guidance.
    • Monitor, document, and report student behavior incidents, maintain behavior logs, and complete required program documentation accurately.
    • Escort and supervise students during transitions, arrival/dismissal, recess, lunch, and bus lines when assigned.
    • Participate in professional development focused on PBS/PBIS, de-escalation for young children, trauma-informed practices, and elementary classroom strategies.
    • Maintain confidentiality and follow district policies, procedures, and mandated reporting requirements.
    • Perform other duties as required.
     
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Knowledge of:
    • Instructional methods, procedures, and objectives, including curriculum implementation, lesson plan preparation and implementation, educational software, student evaluation and grading, record and report preparation, and classroom management.
    • Classroom management techniques and behavior reinforcement strategies.
    • School and district policies, procedures, and routines.
    • Student safety protocols and supervision practices.
    • Basic functions of classroom technology and instructional tools.
    • Basic clerical and administrative skills, including but not limited to typing, keyboarding, filing, and copying
     
    Ability to:
    • Maintain classroom order and ensure a safe and respectful learning environment.
    • Uphold school-wide policies and expectations consistently.
    • Adapt to a variety of grade levels, subjects, and student needs.
    • Supervise students in various settings, including classrooms, hallways, recess, and lunch periods.
    • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and administrators.
    • Exercise sound judgment, flexibility, and professionalism in unfamiliar situations.
    • Log in to and navigate district technology systems to support student learning.
    • Follow daily schedules and routines as outlined in lesson plans.
    • Collaborate with school staff when clarification or support is needed.
    • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
    • Follow oral and written instructions and observe District policies and procedures
    • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and return to and complete tasks in a timely manner
    • Use patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement when supporting K–5 students.
    • Operate and use standard office equipment, including a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties
    • Prepare and maintain required records, files, reports, logs, and documentation
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers and staff members, and other District personnel.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    • Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
     
    Qualifications
    • Highly Qualified status required: have 32+ college credits, have a college degree, or pass the Paraprofessional Assessment with a score of 457+
    • Previous experience working with students in instructional settings is highly desirable.
    • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to implement lesson plans with fidelity.
    • Reliable, adaptable, and committed to supporting schoolwide goals.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative approach.
    • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.   
    Preferred:
    • Coursework or experience in elementary education, child development, psychology, social work, or related fields.
    • Training or experience with PBS/PBIS, elementary de-escalation techniques, restorative practices, or trauma-informed care.
     
     Essential Physical Abilities
    • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, and to hear sounds within the normal range of conversation
    • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and comprehend, prepare, and present a variety of written and text documents and materials
