Job Title: Special Education Teacher
Department: Instructional Staff
Reports to: Director of Special Education
Classification: Exempt
Terms of Employment: 9 months (172 days). Salary reviewed annually and benefits according to Board policies.
Summary
To provide specialized instruction and coordination of special education services for individual students with disabilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Abides by Missouri statutes, school board policies and regulations
• Upholds school rules and administrative regulations
• Attends meetings and performs duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
• Participates in faculty, grade leveland subject area committees and sponsorship of pupil a ctivities
• Maintains a cooperative relationship with staff, students, and community
• Serves as case manager in the development and implementation of IEPs for students with disabilities
• Provides specialized instruction to students with disabilities both in the regular education classroom and in separate special education classes or settings
• Communicates with regular education teachers and principals regarding the educational needs and programs of students with disabilities. Maintains records regarding individual student progress toward IEP goals and objectives, services and accommodations provided, parent contacts, notices and other documentation as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regulations, the Director of Special Education or the school principal.
• Participates in student eligibility evaluations and reevaluations
• Participates in the development of an annual budget request for instructional materials needed to implement and support IEPs for students with disabilities.
• Initiates communication with parents of students with disabilities on a regular basis • Uses technology effectively to implement instruction and to manage documentation requirements.
• Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position
Qualifications
• Valid Missouri teacher certificate in one or a combination of the following areas: Cross categorical, mildmoderate disabilities (includes LD, BD/ED, MR and OHI certifications) hearing impaired, visually impaired or severe developmental disabilities, or, such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

- Read, analyze and interpret professional journals, Board policy, administrative procedures, government memos and statutes
- Write staff memos and ordinary business correspondence
- Keep information confidential when required by law, policy or a particular situation
Computation - Ability to compute ratios, percentages and create and interpret graphs and figures
Reasoning - Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusion
Technology
An individual who holds this position must have: - Basic computer word processing, research, and internet skills
- An ability to effectively integrate available technology into the curriculum
- An ability to access and create reports using the district’s student information software
Other Job Functions - Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation
- Prepare lesson plans for use by a substitute teacher
- Support district/school decisions in a positive manner with the public, other staff, etc. • Maintains professional competence through inservice educationactivities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
- Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, dress, and ap propriate professional manner for the work setting
- Read; analyze andinterpret professional journals, state data, state standards, Board policy, administrative procedures and forms, and governmental regulations and guidance

Physical Demands
An individual who holds this position must have the ability to speak and hear in an environment where numerous conversations and activities may be taking place simultaneously. They must be able to move around the classroom and read handwritten or printed materials.

Conditions and Environment
The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading or unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess or other activities.
